About this site
My name is Miriam Crozier and I feel like my life has always been immersed in music. As someone from Northern Ireland, I adore Seamus Heaney (I think there’s legislation somewhere about loving Heaney if you’re from here), and I have always loved the phrase in his poem Song, ‘the music of what happens’. It speaks to me about the rhythms and melodies of life in a way that makes total sense, so I’ve used it as a bouncing off point for what I intend to write about here, though in a flip of that phrase, this Substack is about all of the things that happen when music meets us, shapes us, puts a fire under us and brings us joy and meaning.

I’m incredibly fortunate to do a job where I write about music for a living, but it’s a particular type of music and as a marketer, I have to write for (mostly) a specific purpose; but in general I am endlessly fascinated by how we interact with music in every aspect of our lives - how it shapes us, what it brings and what it provokes, how it gives us freedom to sit with ourselves and our emotions - and I want to use this newsletter to write in more depth and with more freedom about all the music that I encounter and my everyday life, past and present.
A while ago, I wrote a ‘long for instagram’ post about a gig I’d been to. One of the comments was from a most excellent human, my lovely friend Davy, who talked about my joy and passion for music in a way that had been lost to me for a while, but which resonated with my need these days to look for the positive. The world is a monumental horror show, whichever way you look, which makes things that spark joy SO important.
I want this to be a community where people can also feel joy, sorrow, passion - in fact, any emotion that is sparked by music and life is welcome here. I hope the writing speaks to your own experience and I’d love it if you shared that.
